DUBAI, 21 September 2007 — The 11th session of the Dubai International Holy Qur’an Award started on Wednesday. The contest, which has become a milestone in international Holy Qur’an contests worldwide, saw four contestants show off their prowess in memorizing the holy book. The contestants are younger than 21 years and come from a diverse list of countries. This year 85 contestants are taking part in the event and have been officially nominated by either their respective countries or by Islamic centers to which they are associated. The event is being held at the Chamber of Commerce where large crowds turn up to encourage the participants. The award is beamed live on many TV channels and is considered one of the most popular Ramadan events. The award hands out millions of dirhams worth in prize money with the first place winner getting Dhs250,000. The second place winner bags Dhs200,000 while the third winner is awarded Dhs150,0000. The fourth position winner gets Dhs65,000. Winners are chosen by a judging panel consisting of outstanding Islamic scholars from various parts of the Islamic world who are specialized in readings and who have participated as judges in Qur’anic contests locally and internationally. The total marks for memorization and recitation in each branch is one hundred marks, out of which 70 percent of the marks are given for memorization, 25 percent for recitation and 5 percent for tonal quality. If a contestant makes a mistake in memorization, a ring of bell alerts him and each alert results in the deduction of half a mark.
