Exact copy of Othman Quran displayed in Kuwait's Grand Mosque

KUWAIT, Nov 6 (KUNA) -- An exact copy of the Quran of Caliph Othman bin Affan is now displayed at the seaside Grand Mosque in Kuwait City.Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday, Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Assistant Undersecretary for Cultural Affairs Waleed Al-Fathil said the 499th copy of 500 copies of Caliph Othman's Quran was presented to Kuwait as a member of the board of the Research Centre for Islamic History, Art, and Culture (IRCICA), headquartered in Turkey.Having a copy of the book shows the greatness of the Caliphs and their role in caring for the Quran and emphasizes the importance of Arabic calligraphy and Islamic arts, he stressed.The obtained copy of the Quran is a proof that the Quran read today by Muslims around the world has exactly the same verses of the one reads by the Caliphs, he said.Al-Fathil pointed out that the original Quran of Caliph Othman has a long history, explained that it moved from Al-Madina Al-Monawara in the Arabian Peninsula to Egypt, then to Turkey where it was kept since 1819 in Topkapi Palace, which was the home of Ottoman sultans before being turned to a museum in 1928.The obtained copy of the Quran will be the first possession of the permanent arts exhibition to open in the Grand Mosque, Al-Fathil added.It is now displayed for visitors who can get brochures on its history and kinds of materials used in making it, he said.In 651, the Othman Quran was compiled in Al-Madina Al-Monawara by Othman, the third caliph. Before that, the sacred verses were memorized or written on pieces of wood.
