Korban (Sacrifice) Ritual An Act Of Gratitude, Charity

Bandar Seri Begawan - Aidil Adha will soon arrive, bringing with it the practice of Korban to mark the end of the haj pilgrimage.
The Friday sermon yesterday reminded congregants that performing the Korban - which literally translated means sacrifice, and involves the slaughter of goats, cows or camels - is a beneficial and blessed act.
It is a practice approved greatly by Allah SWT and Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him - pbuh), with the latter strongly encouraging his friends to carry it out. Among the benefits that can be gained include: having one's sins erased, gaining a noble place alongside Allah SWT and increasing one's deeds.
"It is an investment made during life, the returns of which will be reaped in the hereafter," the sermon stated.
Preparations start early in the days leading up to Aidil Adha, which is also known as Hari Raya Haji. During the three days of Aidil Adha, plenty of Korban ceremonies will be held throughout the nation - in mosques, in public and private sector institutes and even in private residences.
The Korban ritual dates back to the time when Prophet Ibrahim (pbuh) willingly sacrificed his son, Prophet Ismail (pbuh) as ordered by Allah SWT. It was a command that tested both men's faith, but one that was carried out without hesitation. At the very last moment, Allah SWT replaced Prophet Ismail (pbuh) with a sheep.
A rite that demonstrates one's gratitude to Allah SWT for the blessings that He has granted, the Korban can also encourage one to be more sympathetic and caring of others, promote the spirit of helping and cooperation and train one to be more charitable.
It also leads to a more even distribution of wealth, as those who can afford to conduct the ritual usually gives out the meat from the slaughtered animals to others, including those who are less well-off. -- (The Brunei Times, 7 Dec 07)
