Bandar Seri Begawan - His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam on Wednesday consented to attend the Islamic New Year 1429 Hijrah celebration at Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah, Kampong Kiarong.
The grand event also saw the monarch present Anugerah Tokoh Ugama/Jawasan Ugama and Anugerah Bakti Hijrah awards to three recipients: Pehin Datu Imam Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Abdul Hamid bin Bakal, Haji Metussin bin Haji Timbang and Haji Zainal @ Abu Bakar bin Idris.
The presentation was the highlight of the celebration, which was attended by hundreds of worshippers.
The Anugerah Tokoh Ugama was announced by Syariah Affairs Director Awang Haji Talip bin Haji Apong, while the Anugerah Bakti Hijrah was announced by Acting Assistant Director of Mosque Affairs Awang Haji Ahmad bin Haji Mohin.
Earlier, Minister of Religious Affairs Pehin Jawatan Luar Pekerma Raja Dato Dr Haji Md Zain bin Haji Serudin said the acknowledgement served as an encouragement for the recipients, as well as members of the public, to work together in upholding, strengthening and expanding the greatness of Islam in the country.
This year's theme, "Tunas Bangsa Berakhlak Al-Quran", is hoped to encourage the youth to be responsible for the country's future by acquiring knowledge, based on the Islamic teachings, and following the Prophet Muhammad's (pbuh) footsteps and making al-Quran a reference to their lifestyle.
Pehin Datu Imam Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Abdul Hamid, recipient of Anugerah Tokoh Ugama, yesterday received $20,000, a certificate of acknowledgment, a souvenir and free first-class medical care in government hospitals.
He began his services with His Majesty's Government in 1966 as "Penguasa Penerangan and Tabligh".
He received formal religious education from the Al-Juned Arabic School in Singapore in 1952 and the Malaya Islam College in 1956. The qualification he acquired was on par with a bachelor's degree at the Al-Azhar University in Mesir.
In 1963, he continued his studies in Usuluddin at the Al-Azhar University and received a master's degree three years later, becoming the first Bruneian to receive a master's degree from the coveted college.
At 28, Pehin Datu Imam Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Abdul Hamid was appointed a member of the Brunei Religious Council, the Royal Meeting Council, the Adat Istiadat Council as well as other important committees in the country.
At 35, His Majesty consented to present him with the title "Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Datu Imam" in recognition of his ability to develop and uphold the Syi'ar Islam in the country.
Between 1971 and 1977, he was the "Timbalan Kadi Besar" before being upgraded to "Kadhi Besar" in 1977, until his retirement in 1994.
In 2001, he received the appointment as Syar'ie Chief Judge. He was also involved in the amendment of law in according to the Syara and Islamic Law.
Pehin Datu Imam Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Abdul Hamid has also contributed to the development of the country by channelling his experience and knowledge.
In return for his devotion, His Majesty conferred on him medals including Bintang Kebesaran Darjah Seri Ugama Islam Yang Amat Bersinar Darjah Pertama (PPSUB), Darjah Setia Negara Brunei Yang Amat Bahagia (DSNB), Darjah Kedua, Pingat Kerja Lama, Pingat Bakti Laila Ikhlas, and Pingat Jubli Perak (Emas).
Meanwhile, Awang Haji Metussin bin Haji Timbang, one of two recipients of Anugerah Bakti Hijrah, has contributed extensively to religious education.
Besides teaching, he was also involved in the arrangement of curriculum at religious schools and the management of religious education development in the country.
He succeeded in implementing two adult religious classes in the 60s.
Due to his diligence toward acquiring knowledge and experience, he was appointed a prosecutor at Kadhi court, a post that very few locals held during the 60s and 70s.
He also contributed to the development and renovation of mosques in the country, including Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah, the management and administration of mosques, and arrangement of programmes in accordance to mosque functions.
Among his contributions was the organising of special courses for imams, planning activities for all levels of the community, counselling, and reading of Ratib Al-Attas at various mosques.
In the 60s, Awang Haji Metussin was very active in religious programmes, including the participation in delegation of sermons to rural villages in Belait, Temburong and Tutong Districts.
For his contributions, His Majesty awarded him with Bintang Kebesaran Seri Ugama Islam Yang Amat Bersinar Darjah Ke Empat on August 2, 1995, and Pingat Jasa Kebaikan in February 1999.
Meanwhile, Awang Haji Zainal @ Abu Bakar bin Idris, second recipient ofAnugerah Bakti Hijrah, devoted himself for 41 years in mosque affairs, from 1966 to 2007.
As a renowned imam with vast knowledge and experience, Awang Haji Zainal led the Belait community in religious studies, reading of al-Quran, berdzikir, and daily religious order.
He also implemented Muqaddam and al-Quran classes for children, dzikir classes and adult religious classes as well as guided the Fadhu Kifayah in the evenings at Sekolah Melayu Ahmad Tajuddin.
Awang Haji Zainal was active in the Muslimin Association Belait District. He assisted in building houses for mosque officers and introduced religious activities for various Islamic celebrations.
He is also fluent in many Brunei Melayu dialects, which helped him to spread Islamic Dakwah in rural Belait.
As an acknowledgment for his contributions, His Majesty awarded him Pingat Kerja Lama in 1991, Pingat Indah Kerja Baik in 1993, Pingat Jasa Kebaktian in 1994, Bintang Keberaran Seri Ugama Islam Amat Bersinar Darjah Ke Empat in 2006, and Bintang Kebesaran Seri Ugama Islam Yang Amat Bersinar Darjah Ke Tiga on July 15, 2007.
