Maal Hijrah celebrations - Malaysia King calls for national unity

PUTRAJAYA: National unity must be the priority of all Malaysians, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin said yesterday.
The people should give their full attention to the need for unity, understanding, tolerance and co-operation among the races, he added.Speaking at the national-level Maal Hijrah celebration at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre, he said they should practise this by assuming the best about each other and caring for one another."Strive to make Malaysia a peaceful nation. Stay away from doing things that will create tension, do not be disrespectful of one another, refrain from sensitive issues or actions that break the law."Also present at the function were the Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Nur Zahirah, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and his wife Datin Paduka Seri Jeanne Abdullah, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Dr Abdullah Md Zin.
The king said that Muslims should remind themselves during Maal Hijrah of Prophet Muhammad's sacrifice and struggle.Abdullah, in his message in the celebration programme book, said Muslims should recall the glory days of Prophet Muhammad and his followers on completing their journey from Mecca to Medina."It is sad that though Muslims make up one-third of the world's population, they are still viewed negatively by others. We must rebuild the ummah to be a community that is respected by others," Abdullah said.In Kuala Terengganu, Datuk Abdul Rahim Tahir, 62, a former state education director, received the state's Maal Hijrah award from Royal Advisory Council member Tengku Sri Panglima Raja Tengku Baderulzaman at the Terengganu Trade Centre.The former discipline teacher introduced the baju kurung and tudung (headscarf) to a school in Dungun to help curb indiscipline in 1972. Little did he know that it would be followed by other schools in the state."Initially, there were some protests, including from parents, but I stood firm with the support of the parent-teacher association. Later I found out that the trend had caught on." In Kota Baru, a former state Dakwah committee chairman, Datuk Mohamed Daud, 62, and a state Islamic Religious Department official, Taufek Tee Abdullah, 45, received the state's Maal Hijrah award from the Sultan of Kelantan at Balai Islam in Lundang on Wednesday night.The sultan, in his speech, expressed sadness at the attitude of the people for not giving more attention to cleanliness in mosques.In Malacca, Bernama reports Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam as advising Muslims to strive for progress by mastering knowledge and practising religious teachings.State Assembly Speaker Datuk Wira Mo'min Abdul Aziz, 70, was named the Tokoh Maal Hijrah while Selamah Abdul Jalil, 68, received the Ibu Mithali Maal Hijrah award.In Kuantan, a former chief imam of the National Mosque, Datuk Kamaruddin Zakaria, who is from Kampung Kuala Kenong Lipis, was named the state Tokoh Maal Hijrah.In George Town, the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas said Muslims were capable of achieving greater heights. Director of the Institute of Islam Hadhari at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Prof Dr Mohd Yusof Othman, known for his research on solar energy, was named the state's Tokoh Maal Hijrah.In Johor Baru, Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman advised Muslims to recall the glorious history of Islam.
